UP Movie Review Sweet and Sad with a touch of brillance-Grade A

Posted by Martin:

UP

Grade A

I was unsure what to expect from UP.  The teaset trailer gave ZERO information other than an old man sitting on the porch of a floating house, but that image alone was enough to pique my interest.  What would the old man be doing on a floating house?

I genually feel sad for those who assume that Pixar movies are "kids" or "children's" movies and then don't see these movies based on that opinion.  Pixar movies do have toys, fuzzy monsters, and talking animals.  Children like these things, goes the thinking, therefore these are children's movies.  UP shows us why that is a horrible mistake to make.

2_pixar-up-frame1-thumb-300x306-6999

This is a wonderful story.  Directered by Pete Docter, who also directed Monsters Inc., this movie is made out of joy and love, and it shows across every frame.

Carl Frederickson, voiced by Ed Asner, is 78 years old, and grumpy, but we see in the opening montage we see that he was a happy man who wanted world adventure with his wife Elie.  Life got in the way though.  The opening montage showing Carl's life with Elie is breathtaking. Themes of loss, disappointment, and lonliness are what open the story.  Not happy, childish, themes.  This is not a "children's" story,

But having said that, this is a Pixar movie.
4_up-pixar-render-thumb-300x287-7005

Watching Carl's floating house across the blue sky is an image that I thoughly enjoyed drinking in.  This was quite joy being shown on the screen.  Louder, more excitable joy was soon on the way.

Up-movie picutre

Russell, voiced by newcomer Jordan Nagai, is a Wilderness Explorer who is intent on helping an elderly person, even if that person doesn't want or probably even need help.

Russell is full blown eight year old.  He is eager to please, but gets tired easily.  He is nice and outgoing, but doesn't understand social cues yet.  He is enthusaism personified.

Upfinal34small

Dug, is a talking dog.  Fix that, he is a dog with a talking collar.  The talking collar is a device of brillance.  How do you introduce a talking dog without introducing a "talking" dog.  Dug is happy dog, Dug loves everyone, expect squirrels.  He tries very hard to be mean, but he isn't.  That isn't who he is.  But Dug is the dog we all want.  We just met Dug, and we love him.  He is a good dog.

The floating house is a wonderful set piece, and director Pete Doctor knows that it must become a character itself.  The house comes alive with creeks and noises and other sounds.  Despire what Carl says, it is never just a house.

UP is joy and enthusiaism personified.  This is a triumph.

Wolverine-Summer begins with a dud. C-

Posted by Martin:

Wolverine-poster-500x740

I am not a comic book geek.  I have never been a serious collector of comics.  I say that to define my own expectation of Wolverine.  X-Men 2 was an excellent comic book movie, I even included it in a top ten list.  But this movie isn't nearly as interesting as that movie was.

Wolverine was a sickly child

We are told that Wolverine was really a sickly child born in the early 19th century.  But the writers couldn't be bothered with exaplining first of all, why was he sick, and secondly, why isn't he sickly anymore?  Pre-credits he is a very sick child, during the opening credits he is a skilled war hero, in MANY MANY wars, and during the movie his sickness is never mentioned again.  So the opening is simply to show that Wolverine has bones that come out of his hands like claws.  (Apparently this is NOT how it happens in the original comics)  The scene simply exists to say, "Look Wolverine Was Once a Wimp!"  But why is that neccessary? It isn't.

Wolverine has joined the American Army, but he was born in Canada but never you mind that, In that time his brother Saber-Tooth has become a loose canon.  So after some poor choices both Wolverine and Sabertooth end up being sentenced to execution by firing squad.  Of course they survive.  Unfortunatly we don't see the firing squads reaction when they don't die.  Instead we see the cut to them imprisoned.  What a great scene that was missed,

Sleepy Special Effects

Wolverine 1 picture

From a techinal stand point the special effects are very lacking.  To spend so little effort on the blades that come out of Wolverine's hands shows just how little effort there was put into this film.  Which ultimately leads to boredom in the theater.

Being bored during ANY movie is a bad thing.  It is sure death to a comic book movie.

New Harry Potter internet trailer

Apparently this is an internet only trailer for Harry Potter.  I am getting more excited about this movie the more clips I see from it.

I have read the book, but that still doesn't mean it will translate well to the screen.  But I am now officially interested.

Quantum of Solace-Grade B; Bond does a true sequel

Posted by Martin

Quantum-solace-poster

Casino Royale 2

Bond returns, and for the first time in its 22 movie history, he returns as a true sequel, to Casino Royale, and not as a individual episode.  Consequently the movie has a very different feel from previous Bond films.  I like the feel of this film.

The opening of Diamonds Are Forever is a connection to the previous On Her Majesty's Secret Service , but that was more to show Connery coming back after Lazenby. And in From Russia with Love there is a brief mention of Dr. No and Connery has a tryst with the brunnette from Dr. No, the only Bond girl to be in two movies.  (Maude Adams, Golden Gun and Octopussy, plays two different characters therefore does not count.)  But those are not story arches as this is.

Old Bond and Who needs Q?
Quantum-of-solace-20080924115340848_640w

I don't get some of the criticism that this movie is getting.  Some people seem to miss the Q branch and Miss Moneypenny, Roger Ebert is in this group.  But what made Casino Royal so good was that it got rid of the gadgets, so why would we want it back now?  Would Q branch even be necessary in the 21st century?  At one point Bond uses a simple digital camera on suspects whose images are then fed into facial recognition software.  In a Roger Moore movie that would have been part of Q branch, but now that technology is a part of normal everyday life.  Who needs Q when Best Buy, Apple, and Sony will do just fine.

I like Daniel Craig as Bond.  I was one of those that didn't want a blond Bond, but man he gets the character.  I am a fan of the original Fleming books that is how I ultimately view this character.  Brosnan may have looked more like the character, but the character certainly wasn't a pretty boy who never got hurt.  I love the fact that they allow Craig to be hurt, make mistakes and be flat out arrogant, that is Bond.  But he is also loyal to M, and it is that aspect of the character that is front and center in this film.

Avengeful Bond?

Bond Running

The film has been marketed as Bond going on a personal rampage on those that killed Vesper in Casino Royale.  But that part is such a small aspect of the film.  Bond really goes on his rampage because someone tried to kill M, and it is that motivation that keeps him going, and keeps him ignoring orders when needed.  His sense of duty to M is a trait that comes straight from the book.  He his fiercely loyal, and M sees how useful a trait that is.

Bring back Martin Campbell

This movie though is not the perfect Bond movie.  Marc Forestor who directed nonaction movies of Monster's Ball and Stranger than Fiction seems to think that editing a movie like Paul Greengrass does with Jason Bourne is a good idea.  It is not.

Martin Campbell who directed Casnio Royale got it right when he stablized the camera and left it stationary as much as possible and just let the action unfold in front of it.  Forestor makes it impossible to enjoy Craig's physical prowess here, because it is impossible to see. Film students should learn from this mistake.

Bond becomes Bond

Since this is a story arch.  Casino Royale begins with how Bond got his 00 number, this one ends with Bond now officially Bond.  After Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace Bond is in the grove, they have gotten the character right.

As a side note a lot of people are wondering where the title comes from, it is one of the last, if not the last, original Fleming short story titles not used as a title.

I found that ReelzChannel now has clips from films.  Here is one from the beginning enjoy:
